A Theater Built by a King, Just for One Masterpiece?!
In 1848, Richard Wagner began composing the Ring cycle.
In 1864, he started designing a theater exclusively for its performance.
In 1876, the Bayreuth Festival Theatre opened its doors, hosting the historic world premiere of the complete Ring cycle—four nights, ten acts, and 15 hours of music.
As 2026 marks the 150th Anniversary of the Bayreuth Festival Theatre, we in Tainan are taking our own first step toward a grand, "mad" dream—
Led by Andris Nelsons, who spent seven years conducting at the Bayreuth Festival and currently commands two of the world’s greatest orchestras;
Joined by the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the very orchestra that performed the world premiere of the Ring outside of Bayreuth;
Featuring tenor Klaus Florian Vogt, a Bayreuth staple for 20 consecutive years;
And bass Vitalij Kowaljow, the most sought-after Wagnerian bass of the modern Bayreuth era.
Alongside soprano Sarah Wegener, a celebrated figure on the international opera stage, they bring a monumental concert performance of Die Walküre, Act I, to Tainan.
The most magnificent, epic lineup—right here in Tainan.
